LNG Powered Fast Ferry
|
Evaluation of efficiency and emissions of LNG powered high-speed ferries Together with DTU-Mechanical Engineering, Mols-linien will look into the efficiencies of gas turbines with a combined cycle system. Based on an outline specification of an INCAT design of 112m fast ferry, an alternative arrangement will be made with LNG powering. Different solutions in terms of propulsion will be evaluated, and for the final proposal detailed calculations will be made of the total efficiencies. The project will be made in cooperation between Mols-linien A/S, Assistant Professor Fredrik Haglind and Research Assistant Kari Anne Tveitaskog from DTU Mechanical Engineering. Machinery powered by LNG reduces emissions significantly, and by implementing a combined cycle, the thermal efficiency increases essentially. The GE-manufactured gas turbine LM2500 combined with an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) improves efficiency by 30-35% in comparison to a propulsion system based solely on the given gas turbine.
